Harlan was preceded in death by his wife Helen Reed Long of 57 years of marriage and his daughter, Sandra Dale Hedrick. Survivors include five grandchildren, Lisa M Forrester of MD, Michelle A Pucci of MD, Stephanie L Conrad of FL, Jennifer N Hedrick of FL, Jeffrey R Hedrick of FL; 10 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. After attending college for his Bachelor's degree at Ohio Wesleyan, he joined the United States Air Force and traveled to several unique cities and countries. Anyone that has spent time with him would know he shared stories of his adventures in the military. While in the military he received his first Master's degree from University of Southern Mississippi. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Air Force on December 31, 1973. Harlan and Helen moved to Tallahassee, FL in 1974 and bought their first home in 1975, where they lived out the rest of their lives. Harlan earned his second Master's degree at Florida State University in Library Science. He also worked for the State of Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services and retired in 1996. Harlan was a member of Saint Paul's United Methodist Church and after retirement he volunteered in the church office answering the phones and later helping with the folding machine for the church bulletins. He visited the Black Dog Cafe and several local restaurants regularly. He enjoyed time with his favorite dogs, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He lived a good life and people will never forget his kind heart, generosity, and sense of humor. The viewing will be held for family and friends on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 from 5-7pm at Bevis Funeral Home on 200 John Knox Rd. Funeral service will be held at Saint Paul's United Methodist Church on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 11am.

    Helen Reed Long, age 94, entered into rest October 2, 2014 at her residence. Helen was born in Wilder, Vermont and had lived in Tallahassee since 1974. She was a member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the church choir. Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Dale Hedrick. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Harlan W. Long; five grandchildren, Lisa Forrester, Michelle Pucci, Stephanie Conrad, Jennifer Hedrick and Jeffrey Hedrick; 10 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church with funeral services to follow. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church or your favorite charity. Susie Mozolic of Bevis Funeral Home is assisting the family with their arrangements.
