He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, serving in the Pacific Theater with the 186th Combat Battalion as a heavy equipment operator, and later in the occupation of Japan. After his return, he served in the Massachusetts National Guard, 181st Infantry for three years, retiring as a Sergeant. George was employed by L. S. Starrett Company in Athol. He retired in March 1988 from L. S. Starrett after 45 years.
