Janes, O.D., age 79, of 35 Lennon St., died Thursday, May 10, 2007, in the University of Massachusetts Medical Center surrounded by several of his children and grandchildren. Born in Concord, N.H., on May 21, 1927, he was the son of Henry V. and Thelma C. (Currier) Janes and grew up in Laconia, N.H. He graduated from the Laconia High School and immediately joined the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he worked aboard the U.S. hospital ship Repose, where he cared for many injured servicemen. This experience guided him to pursue a career as an optometrist when he returned home. He later joined the First Baptist Church, following his marriage to Mary Jean (Whitaker) Clark-Janes, where he remained active. In 1954, he married Claire (Hebert) Janes, who died in August 1983. Together, they raised four daughters, Gayle K. (husband Chris) Morgan-Janes of South Berwick, Maine, Mary E. (husband Edward) Geer of Yukon, Miss., Susan A. (companion Louis Brassard) Foresman of Fitchburg, and Jennifer C. (husband John) Aubin-Janes of Virginia Beach, Va. He had nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Joan Clair Aubin-Janes. In addition to Mary Jean, he is survived by Mary Jean?s three children, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. WE REMEMBER: He attended the University of Vermont and the New England College of Optometry. In 1957, he opened his own practice in Gardner. He continued to work as an optometrist until 1996, when he was forced to retire following a stroke. Dr. Janes was an active member in many organizations, including the Gardner Rotary Club. He was past exalted ruler of the Gardner Lodge of Elks, past master of the Hope Lodge AF&AM, and a member of the Jessamine Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the council on Aging, American Legion Post 905, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also active at St. Paul?s Episcopal Church, where he worked on many committees and church suppers. SERVICES: Calling hours at the Smith Funeral Home Inc., 69 Vernon St., Gardner, are from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church, 14 High St. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon. Throughout his life, John worked to care for others. Donations in his memory may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, 02114. Published May 16, 2007.
