  1. 2.  Phinehas Stiles was born on 20 Mar 1764 in Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts; was christened on 5 Jun 1764 in Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts (son of Edmund Stiles and Elizabeth Preston); died on 31 Dec 1836 in Wendell, Franklin County, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

Date Issue: The only source we have linking Phinehas' parentage and birth, is Guild (1892). If this is true, the problem is that Phinehas was born in 1738, but did not get married until 1795 at the age of 60. Then after Hannah's death, he remarried in 1806 at the age of 68. While possible, this seems improbable.

There is another candidate, Phenehas Stiles, son of Edmond and Elizabeth Stiles who was born 20 March 1764 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. This would put his first marrage at the age of 31. It might also be noted that Shrewsbury is next to Wendell.

I believe that Guild (1892) was incorrect. Our Phenehas was born in Shrewsbury. Proof still needs to be found.

Incorrect Person: There was a Phineas Stiles in Jackson, Maine, however he came to Jackson in 1809 from Manchester, Massachusetts.

    • Land/House : 1789, Wendell, Franklin County, Massachusetts; He purchased Benjamin Glazier's 59 acres for £200. In the deed, Edmund is refereed to as Edmund Stiles of Wendell.
    • Land/House : 1814, Wendell, Franklin County, Massachusetts; According to Richardson (2015) Edmund sold thirty of his Bear Mountain acres to his son, Phinehas, for $400. The text of that deed begins this way: “I, Edmund Stiles, am selling the north half of the lot I bought from Joseph Pepper.” There is no record, however, of any such real estate transaction between Stiles and Pepper, but Joseph Pepper was the father of Benjamin Glazier’s first wife, Elizabeth Pepper. It may be that Joseph Pepper financed Glazier’s purchase of the Bear Mountain property, thus explaining Edmund’s remembering Pepper — rather than Glazier — as the one who sold him his property.
