ORANGE -- Charles L. Barnes, 78, of 232 West River St., died Saturday, March 11, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Bethann Barnes of Dusty Lane in Tully.
His wife of 46 years, Barbara A. (McKenney) Barnes, died Jan. 24. He leaves three sons, Charles E. Barnes of San Angelo, Texas, Larry L. Barnes of Orange and David A. Barnes of Phillipston; a daughter, Jean M. Whitmore of Oxford; two brothers, Loriston L. Barnes of Athol and Fred L. Barnes of Salem, Ore.; two sisters, Ruth Miller and Ethel Landon, both of Athol; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Athol, son of Loriston L. and Lydia (Graves) Barnes. He graduated from Athol High School in 1940, and had lived in Orange for the past 47 years. Mr. Barnes was a Navy veteran serving during World War II and was stationed in Okinawa and Saipan, also serving with the Seabees as an electrician.
Mr. Barnes worked as an electrician at Union Twist Drill in Athol, Rodney Hunt Co. and the Walter E. Fernald School in Templeton, for many years until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Barnes was a 33rd degree Mason, member and past master of Star-Athol Lodge of Masons for over fifty years, past High Priest of Crescent Chapter, past illustrious Master of Titus-Strong Council, past commander Athol-Orange Commandery, past district deputy Grand High Priest, member of the Knights of York Cross of Honor. Past Thrice Potent Master, past Sovereign Prince, past Most Wise Master all part of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Greenfield (Mass.). He was a member of the Orange Senior Citizens Club, the Athol Golden Agers, and the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church. As a young man he attained the rank of Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports and attending band concerts with his wife.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, in Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at the funeral home. Members of Star-Athol Lodge of Masons will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or Star-Athol Lodge, 336 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.
