PETERSHAM -- Harry C. Buell, 91, of 19 Oliver St., died Monday, Sept. 30, in Athol Memorial Hospital.
He leaves his wife of 22 years, Shirley F. (Woodman) Roy Buell; three sons, David Buell of North Sullivan, Maine, and Lawrence and Charles Buell, both of Petersham; a stepson, Robert A. Roy of Herndon, Va.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. His first wife, Ruth (Beals) Buell, died in 1976. He was born in Eastford, Conn., son of Charles W. and Mabel (Clemens) Buell. He moved to Petersham in 1917 and lived and worked at the family farm, Hope Farm on Oliver Street, all his life, working the farm until his death. He graduated from Petersham High School in 1929 and from Stockbridge School of Agriculture, now the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, in 1931.
While operating Hope Farm in Petersham he also did construction work and started Petersham Sanitary Service. From 1957 until 1969, he and his first wife Ruth built and then operated the Oak Ridge Dairy Bar, now called Quabbin Woods Restaurant.
He was a member of Star-Athol Lodge of Masons, and played for 53 years in the Petersham Brass Band. He was one of the founders and co-chairman of the Petersham Agricultural Fair from 1944 to 1962. He was an animal inspector for 28 years, and served on the Petersham Board of Health for many years. He was a charter member of Petersham Lions Club. He was a member of the Petersham Orthodox Congregational Church. In 2002 the Petersham Lions Club established the Harry C. Buell Adult Agricultural Award to honor his contribution to local agriculture and farming.
He constructed Buell Pond on Oliver Street as a place for townspeople to skate, fish and relax. He had a deep interest in stonework, and built a stone barn.
The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in Orthodox Congregational Church, 21 North Main St. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family in East Street Cemetery. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol. Members of the Star-Athol Lodge of Masons will conduct a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Thursday during the calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Petersham Lions Club Memorial Scholarship Fund or Community Service Fund, c/o Jeanine Legare, PO Box 457, Petersham, MA 01366.
