James Alfred Mills was born on 1 April 1834 at Erving, Massachusetts.4,2 He was the son of Gardner Packard Mills and Polly Delvee.1,2,3 On 13 June 1855 James married Almeda Day, daughter of Roxanna unknown.3 James Alfred Mills and Almeda Day appeared on the US Census of 1880 at Erving, Massachusetts.4 According to his obituary, he was "a lifelong resident of Erving and had always been employed by the chair factories until having to give up within less than a year on account of health. He was a member of the Congregational Church and a deacon and was a much-respected citizen in the community.3" James Alfred Mills died on Wednesday, 3 December 1913 at Erving, Massachusetts, at age 79 years, 8 months and 2 days.3
