Rebecca Ellen Surber was born on 23 April 1855 at Hedrick, Iowa.2 She was the daughter of A Surber and Nancy unknown.1 She was congenitally deaf and a full blooded Cherokee. From her, many of her descendants have been deaf.3 Rebecca Ellen Surber was nick named Rachel.2 She was listed in the household of A Surber and Nancy unknown in 1860 US Census at Lancaster, Iowa.1 Rebecca Ellen Surberentered at the Deaf and Dumb Institute, Council Bluffs, Iowa, on 13 October 1866.2 Rebecca had mumps in 1869 and measles in 1877.2 She appeared on the US Census of 1870 at Iowa.4 On 6 August 1877 at Council Bluffs, Iowa, Rebecca married Curley Henry Waldo Brown, son of Israel Curley Brown and Zorada Shepardson. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. B. Talbot, the first Superintendent of the Deaf and Dumb Institute.2 Rebecca Ellen Surber and Curley Henry Waldo Brown appeared on the US Census of 1880 at Lewis, Iowa.5 Rebecca Ellen Surber died on Sunday, 24 March 1895 at Council Bluffs, Iowa, at age 39 years, 11 months and 1 day.2 Rebecca was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Council Bluffs, Iowa; in section D, lot 72, space 2.2
