• Obituary: 29 Jun 2023; Northfield, MA - Eugene L. Murray, 74 of Northfield, MA died at home under hospice care Tuesday (6-27-2023). He was born in Brattleboro, VT on May 1, 1949, the son of Ernest and Evelyn (Reed) Murray. Gene attended school in Vernon, VT and graduated from Brattleboro Union HIgh School in 1968. After high school, he worked for Northfield Mt. Hermon school as a painter and worked part time at Spencer Brothers Ford in Northfield. He began his own painting business, EL Murray Painting, and for over 45 years did interior and exterior painting, drywalling, and wallpapering. He also had his own snowplowing business in the winter. Along with fellow snowplowers "CB" close friends; Ezzie Black, Mike Gibson, Art Knapp, and Bob Phelps, they plowed many Northfield driveways and businesses over the years. On May 16, 1998 he married Susan Gibson in Vernon, VT. They recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Gene enjoyed the home he built in Northfield along with land and stone walls he built on the property. He loved working outside and seeing many wildlife roam their property. He is survived by his mother Evelyn, and wife Susan, daughters, Denise King and her husband Dan of Vernon, VT and Tammy Gibson and her husband Jared of Northfield, MA. He is also survived by two brothers, Ernest and Paul and his wife Lin both of Guilford, VT and his four grandchildren, Justin and Nicholas Lawrence and his wife Fuyla and Kaylee and Kensey Gibson and one great grandchild Ascena Lawrence. At Gene's request there will be a private graveside service officiated by long time friend Rev. Steve Dunklee of Vernon, VT. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 12, 2023 at the West Northfield Playground at 2:00 P.M.
