- History: According to his obituary, "Pete was a graduate of Athol High School, and received BA and MA degrees from Michigan State University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force in WWII. He served as Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Chicago, IL, Richmond, VA, and Atlanta, GA, and was proud to receive the 275th FBI "Possible Medal" for proficiency in the Bureau's history. He worked as a social service caseworker while working toward his degree in Michigan. He retired after 27 years as Professor of Psychology at Mt. Wachusett Community College, Gardner, MA in 1992. He was competitive in age-group running until debilitated by arthritis and was most proud of finishing the Mount Washington Road Race at age 63 with a time of 2:11.53. He loved wilderness, writing essays and poetry about its beauty and the concern to preserve nature for future generations. He was president of the Monadnock Writer's Group as well as Secretary for several years. He served as an Audubon Society volunteer monitoring peregrine falcons and bald eagles along the Connecticut River. Pete was a charter member of the Richmond Conservation Commission, served as Secretary from 1968 until 2000. To honor his service the town donated his name to the Monadnock Conservancy, a 305 acre conservation easement on the Harry J. Bennett Town Forest."

He leaves his wife of 22 years, Susan E. (Robinson) Tandy; two daughters, Kyrra L. and Robyn M. Tandy, both of Orange; two brothers, Dana M. Tandy of Warwick and Richard D. Tandy of Orange; nephews an nieces. A sister, Ferne C. Nawrocki, died in 1989. He was born in Gardner, son of Huber W. and Margaret (Doubleday) Tandy, and lived in Orange most of his life. He graduated in 1966 from Ralph C. Mahar Regional School in Boston. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Mr. Tandy worked on cable television construction throughout New England before working for Time Warner Cable Co, where he was lead technician for 24 years. A musician who had played the trumpet for 45 years, he was president of the Orange Community Band, and a member of Petersham Brass Band, Narragansett Community Band and the former Minute Tapioca Band. He played frequently with Mary's Reminisce Orchestra and the former Stardusters of Gardner and was a music coordinator for Mason-Hale Vespers. He was a member and former officer of American Legion Post 172, and an Orange Revitalization Partnership's Citizen of the Month. He attended Orthodox Congregational Church of Petersham and was a member of its choir. He enjoyed hunting, softball, Red Sox baseball, and playing pitch.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 20, in Orthodox Congregational Church, 21 North Main St., Petersham. Burial will be in South Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 19, in Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Orange Community Band, John R. Tandy Scholarship Fund, c/o Sandrah Fager, 35 Stone Valley Road, Orange, MA 01364.
