Gilbert graduated in 1938 from Mount Hermon School. He then graduated in 1942 from Colby College. On 18 June 1942, he entered military service despite having won a scholarship to Boston University. He served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France. He was twice wounded and awarded the purple heart with an oak leaf cluster. [1] |
